Months 1 to 3: expand kanji and vocabulary

The vocabulary jump is large. Learn new words and kanji daily with consistent review.

Months 4 to 8: grammar and reading

Work through N3 grammar and read short articles regularly to build speed.

Months 9 to 10: simulate the exam

Practise under time pressure, especially reading, and do several mock exams.

How the exam works

The N3 has three parts: language knowledge (vocabulary), language knowledge (grammar) with reading, and listening. The exam takes around 140 minutes in total. To pass you need at least 95 out of 180 points plus a minimum score in each of the three sections.

Frequently asked questions

Why is N3 seen as a hard jump?

Between N4 and N3 the vocabulary more than doubles and texts become much more abstract. Many learners underestimate this transition.

How many kanji do I need for N3?

Around 650 kanji in total. What matters is recognising the different readings in context.

Is N3 useful for work?

N3 shows solid everyday competence and is often cited as a minimum for simple work contexts. For most jobs in Japan, N2 is the real target.
