Months 1 to 4: vocabulary and kanji
Vocabulary grows a lot. Learn new words daily and read authentic texts regularly.
Months 5 to 9: grammar and reading speed
Work through N2 grammar and train to grasp longer texts quickly.
Months 10 to 12: full simulation
Do full mock exams regularly and focus on your weakest section.
How the exam works
The N2 has two blocks: language knowledge with reading, and listening. The exam takes around 155 minutes in total. To pass you need at least 90 out of 180 points plus a minimum score in each section.
Frequently asked questions
Is N2 enough for a job in Japan?
For many positions, N2 is the requested minimum, as it shows you can largely work in Japanese. Some fields require N1.
How big is the jump from N3 to N2?
It is substantial: far more vocabulary, faster listening and more complex reading. Plan enough time.
How long does N2 preparation take?
From N3, many estimate about a year of serious study, depending on background and study time.
